Don't have your own product or service to sell? That's okay, sell someone else's.
Don't want to deal with customers? That's fine, let someone else take care of that while you rake in the profits.
Affiliate marketing and selling removes all the hassle of the overhead that normally comes with running a business.
How does it work?
Just like big businesses hire a sales force to recruit customers and sell products and services to, small businesses online need a sales force as well. The idea of affiliate marketing was started by Amazon.com in 1996. At that time Amazon created a program for associates to register for, and Amazon would provide them with all the necessary technical code and click tracking software to help people like you and me sell actual products from our websites. This created hundreds and thousands of additional websites that Amazon could now make a profit from by simply paying each of the associates that signed up with their program a commission for selling their product for them.
This online marketing model has been duplicated over and over again by most every major player in online "e-tail". By providing an affiliate program, a company reaches far more people than they would by going it solely on their own. Sure, they don't make as much margin on a sale that an associate generated for them due to the fact that they have to pay the associate a commission, or "finder's fee". But so what, they just made a sale that they otherwise wouldn't have gotten on their own. Any amount of profit that they can generate makes it all worthwhile.
And lucky for us, it provides people like you and I who don't have our own products to sell the ability to still make an online business successful.
In today's online environment, we now have affiliate program "warehouses"...affiliate dealers if you will. Companies like Clickbank.com, TheAffiliateJunction.com and LinkShare.com to name a couple all have a collection of affiliate programs from all different product genres that you can search from to find relative products that would fit the content of your site. They are essentially the middle-man that has their own tracking software so that when you put a link on your website to one of their affiliate programs, that referral can be accurately tracked back to your website, so when a sale is made, you get credit for it and you receive the commission check. And all of this happens for you for free.
Joining an affiliate network costs you nothing and is totally free. The affiliate dealers make their money from the companies that list their affiliate products with them. It's the company trying to sell their products by making them available through an affiliate program that is footing the bill. It's another way to market their business and increase their sales force. And you and I get to pick and choose which products from these affiliate networks that we want to promote and earn a commission for by placing on our websites.
Like I said, it's free, you don't have any inventory, no products to ship, no customer service calls to deal with, no hassle whatsoever. All you do is have to provide a content-rich, informational website that can be found by the search engines, and then just promote affiliate products that relate to the content on your site. The more relative the affiliate products are to your site, the higher your conversion rates will be, and the more money you'll make.
Your job as an associate of an affiliate product is to PRE-Sell the customer. You just have to warm them up to the idea of buying. Tap into the emotional side of the purchase and really stress the value of the product and how it will solve problems for the customer. That's why people buy things....to solve their problems.
And the art of PRE-Selling is really no more than providing great information from a content-rich website. And that you already know about, now you just have to get it out in written form. That's the daunting task, but that alone is the foundation of your business, and it will be entirely worth it. Making your content PRE-Sell must come first as you build your online business.

You don't have to write any of the sales pitch, you leave that up to the affiliate company. They provide all the sales copy and the sale closing material. But in order to help make that sales copy more productive, you must first PRE-Sell that customer before you refer them to the affiliate website to close the deal. What's great about the affiliate programs is that you can read every one of their "landing" pages prior to signing up to be an associate and promote their products for them. And if you don't feel it's a strong enough sales pitch, or if you don't feel that the product they're offering is good enough, or relative enough for your website, you can keep looking for a better one. There is absolutely no risk involved on your part to become an associate of an affiliate program.
