How do you Value an Oil Change?

Some people like to change their own oil in their cars, while others like to pay someone to do it. Either way, you're still paying the same amount of money for the oil and filter because that's the physical goods exchanged in the transaction. But for the individual that likes to change their own oil, they get satisfaction out of doing it themselves and getting the car up on ramps and the oil pan out and all the tools necessary to do the job themselves. And a couple hours later, they are satisfied in a job well done, and they know that they saved a few bucks by doing it themselves.

On the other hand, you've got the person that doesn't want anything to do with going to the store and buying the oil and filter, coming home and prepping the car and getting out all of the tools, completing the job and getting all dirty, etc. The amount of work and time involved in this task simply isn't worth it for some people because they value their time differently. So they choose to go to a Jiffy Lube or other auto maintenance establishment and sit for 20 minutes while all of that work is done for them, and in the end, it might cost them an extra $10 or so to have it done for them. If you do the math, let's say that having your oil canged for you at a service station costs you an extra $10 over doing it yourself. And if you factor in the amount of time saved by having your oil changed for you, we can estimate that all in all it saves you 2 hours worth of time. At an extra $10 to save you 2 hours...that's $5 per hour.

If you're someone that values their time at more than $5 per hour, then you're probably more likely to have your oil changed for you. But if you like the "do-it-yourself" approach and gain satisfaction knowing you accomplished something, maybe that feeling is more worth it to you. There are people that see this both ways....and it's the people that value their time more who are going to be your target market in the arena of service selling. And that's how you're going to want to build your website. Tug at the strings of your potential customers by expressing to them how your service is going to save them time and effort, and allow them the opportunity to pursue things that they excel in and allow them to be more productive.

When deciding what service you want to sell from your website, think about the way this service can be delivered. Can it be done through an email attachment? Will it need to be physically shipped? The process of delivery will determine how quickly you'll be able to complete jobs and get final draft or package back to your customer. Focusing on services that can be done over a computer will cost you less in processing and shipping fees and increase your profit margin, and also allow you more time to be spending on the service itself rather than the physical packaging and shipping of the final product.
